Do Adults Have 28 or 32 Teeth?

December 6, 2025

Most adults have 32 teeth, but the number can vary. These 32 teeth include:

  1. Incisors: 8 total (4 on the top, 4 on the bottom)

  2. Canines: 4 total (2 on the top, 2 on the bottom)

  3. Premolars: 8 total (4 on the top, 4 on the bottom)

  4. Molars: 8 total (4 on the top, 4 on the bottom)

  5. Wisdom Teeth: 4 total (2 on the top, 2 on the bottom)

However, many adults have 28 teeth because they have their wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are often extracted due to crowding, misalignment, or impaction, which can lead to pain or infection.

If you’ve had your wisdom teeth removed, you likely have 28 teeth, but if your wisdom teeth are intact and healthy, you will have the full set of 32.

At Schwimmer Dental, we provide comprehensive care in Point Pleasant, New Jersey to ensure your teeth are healthy, whether you have 28 or 32!
