How Many Times a Day Should I Brush My Teeth?
To keep your teeth and gums healthy, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed. Brushing removes plaque, food particles, and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
The American Dental Association recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, brushing for two full minutes each time. Nighttime brushing is especially important because it clears away the day’s buildup and prevents bacteria from damaging your teeth while you sleep.
While twice a day is the standard, brushing after meals, especially if you’ve eaten sugary or acidic foods, can offer added protection. Just be sure to wait at least 30 minutes after eating to avoid damaging your enamel.
And don’t forget: brushing alone isn’t enough. Flossing daily and visiting your dentist every six months are key parts of a complete oral care routine.
