What Does a Dead Tooth Look Like?

September 15, 2025

A dead tooth, also known as a non-vital tooth, occurs when the nerves and blood supply inside the tooth are damaged or die. This can happen from untreated cavities, trauma, or infection. While only a dentist can confirm if a tooth is dead, there are some visible signs to look for.

Common Signs of a Dead Tooth:

  1. Discoloration – A dead tooth often turns gray, yellow, or dark brown. Over time, it may look much darker than the surrounding teeth.

  2. Swelling or Gum Changes – The gum around a dead tooth may appear swollen, red, or tender. In some cases, a pimple-like bump may form.

  3. Bad Odor or Taste – Infection in a dead tooth can cause persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste.

  4. Pain or Sensitivity – While some dead teeth cause no pain, others can be very sensitive, especially if there’s an infection.

Even if the tooth looks normal, it’s important to see a dentist if you suspect something is wrong. Leaving a dead tooth untreated can lead to serious infections.
